Buildings and apartments must be sufficiently ventilated so that the humidity level of the room air doesn’t become too high. Otherwise, mould could develop. Additionally, the domestic ventilation has the task of removing harmful substances and odours from interior rooms. According to the DIN 4108-2 standard, which was introduced by the building authorities and is therefore mandatory, an air exchange is considered sufficient if the air volume of a room is completely exchanged at least once within two hours. This is usually the case in old buildings, which have not been renovated, without any special technical effort. In this case, the building envelope has large leaks through window and door joints, which in conjunction with occasional window ventilation, ensures the necessary air exchange.
